Decorated ostrich egg

100,33

This egg illustrated with ostrich drawings comes from South Africa. Each step in the decoration process was done by hand. The egg was emptied, washed and sanded before the printed motif was transferred to its shell. The ostrich egg is unfertilised and comes from approved farms complying with the Washington Convention on the protection of animals. It comes with a flat bronze stand.

Famous zoologists, inquisitive courtiers and artists flocked to the Versailles Royal Menagerie after it opened in 1662 to see animals from distant places. A large collection of prints of ostriches, elephants, parrots and other exotic animals as well as a splendid egg from Louis XVI's collection decorated by E.Lebel were exposed at the exhibition "Science and Curiosities at the Court of Versailles".
