Astronomy and Conchology compared ' Cabinet of Curiosities

Maïssa Toulet's humorous, anachronistic cabinets of curiosities capture the imagination. Designed as miniature museums, these tableaus in relief comprise small items that the artist found at flea markets and put together in settings that are very different from their original purpose. Pictures were photographed by the artist. This window is a one-off work from a collection of six curiosity cabinets that Ms. Toulet created based on the Science and Curiosities at the Court of Versailles exhibition's themes. Astronomers made major strides in the 17th and 18th centuries. Louis XIV hosted many of them, including Cassini, who joined the Royal Academy of Sciences in 1669. Drawing inspiration from the sometimes far-fetched hypotheses put forward at the time, Ms. Toulet has created an original work by establishing a metaphor between the mineral world and heavenly bodies. At the Science and Curiosities show you can see celestial globes and telescopes attesting to the kings' passion for the natural sciences.
