Grove of the Arc de Triomphe. France Triumphant, by Antoine Coysevox, Jacques Prou and Jean-Baptiste Tuby, 1677-1683. Detail: The Empire Conquered, by Antoine Coysevox, statue, gilded lead. “This handsome man, strong and mature, represents the Habsburg Empire, humiliated by the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye (1679). He looks away, defeated and trampled.”

Completed between 1679 and 1683, this grove only contains one fountain today, France Triumphant, a work by sculptor Jean-Baptiste Tuby. But in Louis XIV’s day, a large triumphal arch stood here and gave its name to this “green salon”. The fountains of Glory and Victory, which stood not far from the first, did not survive the centuries and were probably melted down in the 19th century.
