Catalogue of the exhibition The Palace of Versailles and the Mobilier national

45,00

Presenting over 120 pieces of furniture and objets d'art deposited by the Mobilier national in Versailles, this catalogue traces the life and history of these exceptional objects which have now returned to their original setting. These outstanding works, showcased in a setting designed by Jacques Garcia, join the collections of Versailles. They include vases made by Valladier for Madame Du Barry, several clocks from the collections of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, and part of the astronomical clock from the library of Louis XVI, delivered to the king in July 1789.

The pieces of furniture and objets d'art come originally from Versailles, as well as from other royal residences, having escaped the Revolution's auctions. Some unusual objects reveal more about certain aspects of everyday life in a royal residence than the masterpieces on view. These unique objects which cover a wide spectrum of the decorative arts, and the other pieces of furniture and objets d'art, are often related to key historical events, glorious or tragic episodes and the major figures connected to them (their portraits are also presented). The catalogue tells some often incredible stories about them, as well as giving details about the tastes of the patrons who commissioned them, the talents of the suppliers, and the complex mechanisms of the royal and other furniture storehouses handling the orders.

For those wishing to obtain even more details, the special issue of the magazine l'Estampille, likewise associated with this exhibition, is available from the online boutique.
