The Death of kings takes the opportunity of the tercentenary of Louis XIV’s death to look back at this event, considered an impressive baroque spectacle, but also to focus on the traditions and rituals of the death of kings in France (from Henri IV and the Valois to the Bourbons) and, more recently, to national tributes paid to leading figures.

This work is based on the exhibition The king is dead, Louis XIV – 1715, taking place at the palace of Versailles from 27 October 2015 to 21 February 2016, with contributions from the two curators, Béatrix Saule and Gérard Sabatier. Illustrated by works representing the exhibition, The Death of kings presents articles that address the various themes of the exhibition as well as a portfolio enriched with educational topics that can be used in the classroom.”
