The Royal Walk and Grand Canal. Perspective from the Water Parterre. “For me, this is a masterpiece of visual illusion by André Le Nôtre. From the top of the steps of the Grand Degré you get the feeling that the water in the Grand Canal is not horizontal, but rises up like an open book turned toward the reader. Le Nôtre had planned this effect when he designed the Grande Perspective. It is brilliantly calculated and effective.”

Also called the “Green Carpet” because of the strip of grass that runs down the middle, The Royal Walk is 335 metres long and 40 metres wide. It was laid out under Louis XIII, but Le Nôtre widened it and punctuated it with twelve statues and twelve vases laid out in symmetrical pairs. Most of them are works sent by students at the Académie de France in Rome in the 17th century. On either side, walks provide access to the groves that visitors can stroll through and discover at their own pace.
