The Fables of Jean de La Fontaine in a play version!
The box illustrates 'The Crow and the Fox' which appeared in Book I of his Fables, first published in 1668. The moral of this fable is that we must beware of flatterers and that a good command of language is important for getting what we want.
This fable was written by Jean de La Fontaine (1621 - 1695), who took his inspiration from the tales of Aesop, the fable writer from Greek-Roman Antiquity. The French poet Jean de La Fontaine formed part of the 'Table Ronde' Literary Academy. The Marquise de Montespan, who became a mistress of Louis XIV in 1667, took him under her protection, as she did Molière and the poet Philippe Quinault.
