In the 16th and 17th centuries cabinets of curiosities contained collections of small, rare and intriguing objects from the plant, animal or mineral worlds. Exotic butterflies, insects, stuffed animals and anatomical deformities captured the viewer's imagination. Some cabinets of curiosities focused on specific themes, such as that of the Marquis de Sérent (1736-1822), which concentrated on American Indian populations.
