Hand-held compass telescope

95,00

This hand-held brass telescope comes with a compass. An ideal men's gift, it is a decorative object but can also be used for close-up views of relatively distant things or people. The telescope is 84cm long when completely unfolded.

These kinds of telescopes were used on round-the-world expeditions. In 1785 Captain La Pérouse left for his last voyage of exploration. The king had requested him to map the planet, establish new trading posts and discover unknown peoples. The expedition never made it back to France: the ships and crews sank off the coast of Australia in 1788.
