The Gardens of the Petit Trianon. Temple of Love. Love cutting his bow from Hercules’ club, by Philippe Mouchy, copy of the statue by Edme Bouchardon dating from 1750, marble, 1780-1781. “The statue of Love cutting his bow from Hercules’ bow, stands like a precious jewel inside the delicate little temple by Richard Mique, which Queen Marie-Antoinette wanted to be able to see from the windows of the Petit Trianon. The low golden light of this this late autumn day illuminates it harmoniously.”

To complete his English garden, Mique had the Temple of Love built on an island in 1778. The neoclassical building owes its name to the statue by Bouchardon that stands in its centre: “Love cutting his bow in Hercules’ club”. The original statue is now at the Louvre. It has been replaced by a copy by another 18th century artist, Mouchy.
