Horse sketchbook

This notebook is part of the range of products designed in connection with the National Equestrian Academy of the Estate of Versailles.

The elegant disorder of this drawing, which seems unfinished, reveals nothing about the context. This sketch by Jean-Louis Sauvat is one of various charcoals drawn by the artist on the walls of the Grand Écurie arena.
During the Ancien Régime, a horse’s destiny was often determined by its origin. Hundreds of horses from all over the world were housed in the Great Stables according to their breed and coat colour, including Spanish, Arabian and Persian horses which were used for parades and carrousels, fast English horses for hunting and carriage horses from Poland, Denmark and Prussia.
