The Royal Chapel of Versailles

The masterly restoration of the Royal Chapel of Versailles was completed in the spring 2021 after more than three years of work. This is the occasion for a new edition of Alexandre Maral's book published in 2011. Benefiting from a large-scale photographic campaign carried out by the Palace's photographers, the updated text is enriched by a presentation of this exceptional project by the architects who led it. From the gilding of the roof that has been rediscovered to the restoration of the framework, the stained glass windows and the sculptures, it is the entire building that appears today in its initial splendour. A religious testament to Louis XIV, the chapel, built from 1687 onwards, is a manifesto of the innovative architecture of the time by Jules Hardouin-Mansart, then Robert de Cotte. With its extraordinary decoration, it is also an artistic masterpiece of the Great Century in which more than one hundred sculptors participated, including the Coustou brothers, and the painters Jouvenet, Antoine Coypel, La Fosse and the Boullogne family. The present edition gives an account of this richness through an exhaustive repertory, in particular of the statues and bas-reliefs, restored but original, which form the most important preserved authentic ensemble of the classical period.
