Louis XV
Passions of a king

On June 15, 1722, during the Regency interlude that began with the death of Louis XIV on September 1, 1715, the Court returned to Versailles and Louis XV (1710-1774), who was twelve years old at the time, returned to the places that had cradled his early childhood. A few months later, on October 25, the coronation of the young king in Reims marked the beginning of a long reign of more than fifty years which witnessed the affirmation of the French cultural and artistic model in the rest of Europe and the great shift towards modernity of which Louis XV was the melancholic hero.

Beyond the public image of the king, this book, published on the occasion of the tercentenary of the return of the Court to Versailles, seeks to shed new light on the character of Louis XV and to grasp the complexity of the man behind the monarch, by bringing together exceptional works from collections around the world, many of which have never before been shown in France. Who was Louis XV, what was his personality, his way of life? Who made up his entourage? Where did his passions take him? What were the arts of his time, his personal taste and in what universe did he evolve on a daily basis?
