Masterpieces of the King's bedroom

Among the successive chambers occupied by Louis XIV at the Palace of Versailles, the last one, refurbished from 1701, remains the most emblematic. Its location in the center of the royal apartment overlooking the Marble courtyard has the force of a symbol: it is the starting point of the Sun's journey. In this sumptuous space, tenebrous painting dominated, a conscious choice by the king, reflecting his varied tastes.

Mythical figures still adorn the attic, the upper part of the decoration, including the four evangelists, St. Matthew, St. Luke, St. John and St. Mark, the Denier of Caesar painted by the best of French Caravaggio, Valentin de Boulogne, and Hagar and the angel by Giovanni Lanfranco.
