This passport cover bears the monogram of Louis XIV.
A monogram is composed of two copies of an initial that have been interwoven to form a single character, as with the letter L here for Louis. The monogram is considered a royal signature.
Royal emblems, such as the double L, the royal crown, the sceptre and the hand of justice, feature everywhere in the decor at Versailles. This monogram is notably found on the woodwork in the King's Apartments and the staircases.
The passport cover has four pockets, two of which allow the passport to be kept open. Made of full grain leather, it is hardwearing and pleasant to handle. The cutting, assembly, folding and packaging are carried out by hand using partly traditional methods.
